Your child is suffering from a refractory or recurrent solid tumor disease or leukemia. Even in this situation established therapies for many childhood tumor diseases exist, which your treating physicians have discussed with you.
The phase I/II trials in our network as a treatment option are reserved for situations in which there is no standard treatment option. The drugs used in these studies in children are new and innovative, yet toxicities are less well known compared to chemotherapies. Therefore, the effects and side effects are monitored at least weekly, especially at the beginning of treatment. Side effects that are observed must be quickly communicated to the clinics where the studies are running in parallel. This procedure enables a high degree of safety.
